Riggins Sacred Salmon Ceremony &
Friendship Feast

Nez Perce - Horace Axtell Conducting
Saturday - May 24, 2008 - 2pm
Spring Bar on Salmon River

Purpose of Ceremony: To welcome salmon back to their ancestral waters. Also, to bring together the native  and non-native communities to help heal old wounds from a common historical legacy of social injustices.

The Ceremony:  Horace Axtell, a Nez Perce spiritual leader, will rally people of today and unite them to the land, water, fish, wildlife, and ancient peoples who imbue this enchanted land with the power of place and interconnected songs of the earth.

Sacred Boat Circle: a lead dory with drummers and singers, followed by a parade of additional craft will circle the Spring Bar Salmon Eddy in a sacred manner Anyone is welcome to bring their own boat or raft and participate.

Sacred Salmon Circle:  after the river eddy-dance, a special Salmon Circle will be made above shoreline.   Time will be given to anyone who wishes to express their feelings of thanks to the Salmon Nation, and passions from the heart about our
inter-community spirit and shared natural resources.

Potluck Friendship Feast: Wild game, fish, food, and drink will conclude the event and give people a chance to relax, visit and share stories.  All people are encouraged to bring any kind of food (wild when possible) and drink, aside from alcohol.  This is a non-alcoholic event. Please respect this observance.  Thank you.
